|In August I interviewed Canberra Liberals Shadow Minister for the Environment, Elizabeth Lee, regarding their ‘Million Trees’ policy proposal for the upcoming ACT Election.
At the time, a Canberra Liberals spokesperson told Mordd IndyMedia / Independent Australia that “All of our policies are fully costed and will be released before the election”.

This included the policy being submitted for costing to the ACT Treasury department during the official election campaign period for this, which ends on the 15th October, 2 days before polling day itself.
Whilst the signature part of the policy Lee described involved saplings for kindergarten kids, there were many other elements to the policy as well, as detailed in the interview Lee gave, that required costing.
However when it has come time to submit the policy for costing by Treasury, the Canberra Liberals have only submitted the element involving saplings for kindergarten kids and left out the entire rest of the policy from their official costings request.
This is a far cry from “all of our policies are fully costed” and frankly deceptive behaviour by the Canberra Liberals.
Mordd IndyMedia was not provided with any details of how the policy had been “fully costed” at the time of the interview two months ago, prior to the Treasury costings period, so we can only go off what has been submitted now to Treasury for formal costing.
As you can see from this post from Labor MLA Michael Pettersson, the costings submission for the policy only addresses the cost for just over 15,000 of the one million trees the policy is meant to entail in full.
You can see from the Treasury website that no other costings requests have been lodged regarding this policy, with less than one week to go before the ability to request formal costings from Treasury ends.
An enquiry has been sent to the Canberra Liberals spokesperson Elizabeth Lee in regards to this discrepancy, and this piece will be updated if a reply is received.
Meanwhile voters may wish to exercise caution around any promises from the Canberra Liberals regarding policy costings.
The Belco Party has already been criticised this election campaign for releasing un-costed “fantasy” policies with no clear idea of how the policy would be funded if elected, it seems the Canberra Liberals have been doing somewhat the same thing.
